“My Father Said” Lyrics, by Deva Troy

1)
My father was an oak tree.
He was a solid wiry guy,
With a strength I could depend on
And a will wired to survive.
Constant and unyielding, shoulder to the stone,
He did what he thought he had to, to keep us in our home.

Chorus
Where there’s a will, there is a way.
Where there’s a dream you need a plan.
You can do anything if you put your mind to it, my father said…

2)
My father raised a family
With Mom after the war.
They raised us in the suburbs
In middle class favor.
He went to work each morning
And he came back home each night.
Like clockwork, so dependable,
He gave us a good life.

Chorus
Where there’s a will, there is a way.
Where there’s a dream, you need a plan. Y
ou can do anything if you put your mind to it, my father said…

3)
My father made his living
By selling sportswear jeans.
He would have been an engineer
If the war hadn’t changed his scene.
He wasn’t much of a front man,
But he learned how to excel.
He got a plaque for the million dollar club,
Because he learned to sell.

Chorus
Where there’s a will, there is a way.
Where there’s a dream you need a plan.
You can do anything if you put your mind to it, my father said…

4)
My father was an oak tree,
But now he sways a lot
And his trunk has 89 rings
And he’s often lost in thought,
But I can still remember when he’d lift me to the sky,
But now he needs my help to walk and my company to thrive.

Chorus
Where there’s a will there is a way.
Where there’s a dream you need a plan.
You can do anything if you put your mind to it, my father said…
And he was just that kind of man.
